Dr. Philip Stiles

Philip Stiles is a Senior Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge. He joined the Judge faculty in 1997 and is a frequent contributor to Executive education programmes in leadership and teamwork. He gained his Ph.D from London Business School in 1997.

Apart from his work on Organisational Behaviour, leadership and teamwork Philip also researches HRM and change management processes. His work in this area has been carried out over the last two years leading a major project into Global Human Resource Management in collaboration with colleagues from INSEAD, Cornell University, and Erasmus University Rotterdam, and including 60 companies worldwide. A central feature of this work is the role of the HR function and its operation and influence across boundaries.

He is also researching into human capital management and was a member of the Kingsmill committee on human capital, Accounting for People (2004).

Previously, at London Business School, he was involved in a consortium of ten major companies - the Leading Edge Forum - examining the processes of transformation and behavioural change. A book detailing this project, `Strategic Human Resource Management', was published by Oxford University Press in 2000.

Dr Stiles is also active in researching the role of board directors and the nature of board dynamics. His research in this area is primarily focused on interviews with directors of large public companies, examining such questions as: what are the causes and conditions for board effectiveness, and what are the key behaviours and skills required of directors for them to make a significant contribution. A book derived from part of this research `Boards at Work' was published by Oxford University Press in 2001. Dr Stiles has also been a chief researcher for the Higgs Report into Non-Executive Director effectiveness, published this year.

As part of his work he regularly acts as a consultant to both public and private organizations, including management development work with senior management teams.
